Copenhagen, Denmark (AHN) – A Danish court on Monday decided to keep a Chechnyan man in detention for two more weeks after he was identified as Lors Dukayev and is believed to have prepared a letter bomb for a newspaper, which published caricatures of Prophet Mohammed.

The court’s decision means he will remain in custody until October 4.

Dukayev, who was slightly injured when a letter bomb exploded in his hands last month, told the court that he was a Belgian resident and had been living in Liege since past few years.

Talking to reporters after the court’s hearing, his lawyer Niels Ancker Rasmussen said that his detention did not come as a surprise since they were expecting it in view of the nature of this case.

Dukayev refused investigators’ request to talk anything about the attack. However, investigators believed that daily Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which controversially published Prophet Mohammed’s cartoons in September 2005, was primarily targeted in the attack.

Danish police had captured Dukayev shortly after the rigged letter exploded in his hand at central Copenhagen’s economy Joergensen hotel. He was hiding in the nearby park after the blast. Police charged Dukayev for illegally possessing explosives and risking people’s lives, however, no terrorism charges were held on him.
