Rome, Italy (AHN) – The fight against tax evasion continued in Italy as financial police claimed that nearly $68 billion of income went unreported last year, which was a rise of 46 percent compared to the previous year. Out of the total undeclared income, $27 billion belonged to only 8,850 employed workers.

In an attempt to avoid tax, Italians sent more than $13 billion to foreign countries – 26 percent of which ended up in Luxembourg, 25 percent in Switzerland, seven percent in Britain and six percent in Panama.

Responding at the report, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said that a quarter of country’s economy goes untaxed last May, forcing Italy to struggle with huge public debt.

According to central bank’s prediction, Italy’s 2010 public deficit is likely to be under 5% of gross domestic product and public debt is expected to be 118.6% of GDP.

GfK noted that the VAT caused a big drop in large purchases.

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Members of Congress are renewing their calls for tough budget cutting after a new Congressional Budget Office report this week said Social Security will pay out $45 billion more in benefits than it takes in this year.

President Obama spoke about the need to reduce the deficit during his State of the Union address on Tuesday but offered no specific proposals for Social Security.

The Congressional Budget Office issued its warning while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose above 12,000 for the first time since June 2008 in a sign the economy is recovering.

Nevertheless, the housing market remains depressed and joblessness hovers around 9.4 percent.

The CBO said legislative changes are the only way to prevent Social Security funds from becoming depleted.

The portion of the fund that provides benefits to disabled persons is the weakest, heading toward depletion by 2017, the CBO reported.

The CBO, which does economic analyses for Congress, said the nation’s deficit would reach $547 billion from 2012 through 2021 at the current rate.

Obama called for greater cooperation among political parties to reduce the deficit.

Some members of Congress are skeptical about the effectiveness of his plea for unity on budget-cutting.

Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) told reporters that it “remains to be seen” whether Obama will be successful in getting the response from Congress he seeks.

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND) said Obama needs to do a better job of explaining to Americans the seriousness of the budget deficit.

Mooresville, NC, United States (AHN) – Home-improvement retailer Lowe’s has announced it will cut 1,700 full-time middle manager jobs and hire up to 10,000 part-time employees to staff its stores on the weekends.

Lowe’s said Tuesday the laid-off middle managers can apply for one of the part-time weekend jobs or any other available position. The company employs 238,000 workers nationwide.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s said it plans to hire between 8,000 and 10,000 part-time employees nationwide to work on the weekends when many do-it-yourselfers shop at the store. The company said it expects the move to improve customer service on the weekends, which are Lowe’s busiest time of the week.

The part-time weekend workers will be tasked with encouraging customers to buy more.

Lowe’s has trailed rival Home Depot in profit growth recently. Rising home foreclosures, sinking home values and sales and the stagnant economy have kept growth down.

Eliminating the managers will remove a layer of management at the stores, which will now have just two layers of management, store managers and newly created assistant store managers. Most stores had between four and six managers. Lowe’s is cutting the middle managers who oversaw store operations, sales and administration. The new assistant store manager’s position will manage merchandise categories.
